Ruby Barr Faught
Ruby Barr Faught attended Arkansas College 1943 - 47 on a scholarship, working in the library and the registrar's office. She was named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities and was active in a sorority, Sigma Alpha Sigma, and in Westminster Fellowship, the Highlander and Index staffs, and Harlequin Theatre. After graduation she stayed on for four years, working with prospective students and alumni. "You could say I represented the before and after," she says.
As an alum, she gave small amounts as she was able. Then at a reunion she heard about a scholarship that was being built up over the years and realized she could do the same. She determined to create a scholarship as part of her will.
As time went by, she transferred money out of her checking account, but as she grew older, she felt a bit insecure about giving it away during a time when she could potentially run up extensive bills for health care. Instead, she put the money into a Certificate of Deposit specified to go to Lyon upon her death. It continued to grow from the interest for several years, although it has remained relatively static for the last several years. "At least the principal is still there," she says, assuring that her wish to sponsor a scholarship remains safe.
She explains her desire to establish the scholarship: "My hope is that future young people can enjoy being a part of this school, learning about relationships with each other and God in a safe, close community as I did." She encourages others to invest in the future, stating, "We all are aware of the hatred and evil in our world, and we need to equip young people to face it with love and fresh ideals."
